Plainclothes policemen will be deployed at a special job fair in Pasay City on Wednesday, June 10, to prevent unscrupulous companies from “gate-crashing” the event and duping innocent applicants.
Mayor Wenceslao “Peewee” Trinidad said he ordered the deployment of the police to prevent a similar occurrence to the SSS Job Fair at the HK Sun Plaza along Roxas last month when a trading company “sneaked” in and duped applicants into shelling out P500 before they could sell the company’s products.
He said the city is expecting about 2,000 applicants to participate in the Special Job Fair to be held at the Pasay City Mall on Wednesday with about 1,000 local and overseas employment in the offing.
“We want to ensure that all applicants joining our job fairs will be safe from scams. That is why I ordered the police to monitor all job fairs in Pasay including those sponsored by the private sector,” Trinidad said.
Meanwhile, Pasay Chief-Of-Staff Greg Alcera said they had temporarily withheld the renewal of the business permit of the erring trading company pending results of an investigation. He said the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is likewise conducting a separate investigation on the company for charging P500 from its applicants.
He urged applicants to check whether the hiring firm is accredited with the Public Employment Service Office (PESO).
Alcera said the police and PESO personnel will be roving around the job fair site to ensure that applicants will be safe from illegal activities.
He said free blood pressure check-up as well as free reflexology will be available to visitors. The June 10 job fair is held in coordination with Eduardo Mendoza, Pasay City Public Market administrator and Renato Reyles, Pasay City Mall manager.
To date, Pasay has initiated the most number of job fairs in Metro Manila, conducting them every Wednesday and four Mega job fairs annually. In addition, the city also participates in job fairs initiated by the national government and the private sector.
PESO Officer-in-Charge Jorge Castro said Pasay has invited 40 companies to join the DOLE three-day Independence Day job fair at the San Lorenzo Ruiz Park in Luneta on June 12, 13 and 14.
He said about 25,000 jobswill be available for the public in the Mega Job and Livelihood Fairs. He said applicants who are interested in securing government employment can visit the fair on June 12, for local employment on June 13 and for Overseas Employment on June 14.
“This is bigger than the Labor Day Job Fair last May 1 where 10,000 workers were hired on the spot. We are fully supporting the DOLE,” Castro said.
According to officials, early registration may be done via http://phil-job.net so participating private companies and government agencies can pre-screen jobseekers and subsequently hasten the selection and on the spot hiring of qualified applicants.
